  • I enjoy sending and receiving QSL cards - but I am not a huge fan of addressing envelopes. So to ease my burden, I ordered a rubber stamp that has my call sign, address and QRZ page URL on it - it also fills in that blank spot on my QSL card above the address space.

  • I moved the IMAX 2000 10 meter vertical antenna off the tripod it had been sitting on onto a more stable and expandable base. I purchased a couple of sections of galvanized pipe (1-1/4" and 1" diameter x 10 feet lengths) and using hangers created a pole for mounting the antenna higher. I will be adding a 1-1/2" x 10 feet section to the base soon to get the antenna 30' in the air. The difference has been night and day - I made a New Zealand QSO on FT8 on 17 meter.
  • I'm starting the plans to bring the coax for the antenna's permanently into my shack. I think my best option is a window feedthru system similar to the MFJ-4603 - I'm debating whether to homebrew this or purchase. I'm thinking that a piece of PVC panelling layered together for the proper thickness might be the way to go - pictures to follow.

  • I signed up for SOTA yesterday and located a summit about 40 miles from me that I am going to activate. I'm putting together my plan now and I think will take my family on the hike to the activation point. I've been thinking about SOTA for a couple of months and hope that I am successful. I'm not sure what band I am goign to activate on yet - possibly 2m but still thinking it thru.

  • Continents of the World tonight! That one has been a struggle to get - Africa I think was the last one. Did more PSK31 tonight - I was enjoying the rag chewing more tonight - lots of fine folks on 40 meters.

  • My wife and I went to the Hamfest in Mullica Hill, NJ on Sunday. I was hoping to find an antenna analyzer for sale (a RigExpert or MFJ), but none were there. There were a LOT of amplifiers and old radio's there - it was fascinating to see them all. We left with some much needed SO-239 caps and a delicious breakfast sandwhich courtesy of the Boy Scouts.
  • I brought out the 20-80 meter MagLoop antenna the other day and tuned it for 80 meter on digital. I was pleasantly surprised with about 20 QSO's on FT8 and PSK31. The best part is that the antenna is low power (25 watts max) and all my QSO's were made with the antenna in the house. I'm excited that I have an indoor antenna that works INDOORS - this will be very nice when the weather prevents me from opening the sliding glass door and snaking the coax in for the antenna's in the trees (I have not run them to the basement yet).

  • I picked up an Imax 2000 10m Verticle antenna yesterday from Cheapham.com - drove to Toms River to get it and it was worth the trip. Frank is extremely helpful and got me all setup. I put it up today on a military surplus tent pole tripod - it's about 22' up and then extends another 24'. Surprisingly, I can tun 6, 10, 12, 15, 17 and 20 meters on it. I have already made some 10meter FT8 contacts and am looking forward to some local rag chewing this evening (which is why I purchased it in the first place).

  • I was checking my logbook today and realized that I only need five more states to get WAS - wow! At least five more for LoTW - I need 13 states for QRZ and I don't know how many for eQSL. It's funny that QRZ seems to be lagging so far behind. In any case, I have a friend who is spotting for me as well and sends me texts when he sees states I am looking for (which btw are AK, HI, MT, OR and WY).

  • Got my 13 Colonies Certificate the other day - it's very nice! Not bad for a new Ham - clean sweep and one bonus station after operating for only 3 months.
  • I also ordered some business cards with my call sign for handing out at hamfests, swap meets and anywhere else I want to geek out a bit.
  • We went to a garage sale earlier today and I saw a quad antenna in a neighbors yard - I just stood there like a nerd trying to figure out what band it was designed for - I didn't event look at the garage sale stuff.
  • Got my first QRZ.com award this morning as well - United States Counties - Mixed - yay me!
  • Busy day - and it's only 4:30PM!
  • UPDATE: Grid Award today as well.

  • Oh! I am in love with FT8. It's fast and requires constant monitoring and adjustment. I loaded JTAlertsX and setup the states that I am hunting for WAS - it's exciting every time the 'ding ding ding - new state' sounds.

  • I'm the CIO for a Streaming Media company in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. I have a background in infrastructure (networking, servers, virtualization, etc) and also worked for GE Americom who launched and flew many North American and international satellites. I like to write light code for gaming and am an avid gamer, both video and board games. I particulary enjoy space and flight simulation games (Elite:Dangerous, XPlane, etc.)
  • I received my Technician license on May 22, 2017 and then my General license on June 14, 2017. You can generally find me on on 146.520 2m National Simplex Call during my morning and evening commutes. There's a great groups of Ham's that talk on that frequency. I also frequent the CJTN hosted on the K2GE repeater for traffic nets at 2000 eastern most evenings.
  • I just started using digital modes (PSK31 is my favorite at the moment) and am spending a lot of time at 14.070MHz. I'm also trying my hand at JT9/65, but not having nearly as much success with QSO's in that mode.
  • I'm currently studying for my Extra ticket and hope to test within a couple of months.
