Activation of the lighthouse located in Cape San Blas in St Joe Florida WLOL USA-135M  Grid EL79IT 11/11/2017 W4RYZ/W4.  88 contacts made using SSB, CW, PSK31 and FT8 modes.

The new FT8 Mode

Running the KX3 or the FT817nd for portable ops with the new FT8 mode

20 meter contact with Bob, KK4DIV on his first FT8 mode operation.

                                               Field Day 2017

Field Day set up day 1 using portable "Go Box" mainly running digital mode and phone.

This was my Field Day 2017 set up on day 2 for QRP contacts using battery only for power. Filled up log sheet with contacts on 10, 15, 20 & 40 meters! The FT817nd had no problems working with only 5 watts  making contacts!

                                      Field Day 2016         KE4FD

Field Day 2016 Team (L to R) Jim K4LIX, Henry N4HHM, Cory N4UVR, Marv KK4DKT, Steve N4VSP, seated Charlie NF4A.

Former KC4HWE (novice)

Cushcraft R6000 multiband up 40' along with a Alpha Delta DX-B sloper and home brew 40m dipole.

Station now includes the Yaesu FT-1000MP, Kenwood TM281a and a SignaLink USB  for digital operations.

Homebrew 2 meter/ 70cm Satellite yagi antenna. Using homebrew bandspreader box to run both antennas into a single 50 ohm feedline into a Quansheng TG-UV2. Based on a design by WA5VJB. Tripod set up to free up a hand for easier operation.

Antenna Analyzer readout indicates resonance at 145.600 mhz and 436.800 mhz for satellite uplink and downlink frequencies.

2/19/2017 This is my latest homebrew. This would be a five element Log Periodic Dipole Antenna design for under $40 bucks using cross bow aluminum arrows. Tuned for 2m/70cm satellite operations. Using a Quansheng TG-UV2 5 watt HT using the cross band function. Antenna analyzer indicates SWR of 1.129 on VHF and 1.249 on UHF.

4/6/2017 Added the Yaesu FT817ND to the Satellite Ops. Perfect rig for Semi-Duplex operation working LEO Satellites FM mode and Linear Sats working SSB. This is a fun set up that is a little challenging but very enjoyable!

Can always go portable QRP ops using base loaded verticle for 80 thru 20 meters.  Elecraft T1 tuner works well with the FT817 an will tune just about anything to operate under less than desirable conditions.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elecraft KX3 for portable QRP ops! This is by far the best QRP set up that I have owned. It is pure pleasure to operate! Using MagLoop 3.0 or LNR EFT-10/20/40 EndfedZ antenna with the KX3 works extremely well for quick portable set up.

Field Day/Portable Operations

8/23/2016- Portable "GO BOX" is set up with the Yaesu FT-450D for HF and 6 meters, Alinco DR-135 MK III VHF mobile rig & MFJ 939Y IntelliTuner to easily match different antenna variations that make the FT-450D happy. Powered by Samlex 1235m power supply with BBM module for charging the 35AH battery back up.

SignaLink USB for digital PSK31, RTTY and FT8 operations.

Sain Sonic GT-890 made into a portable kit using ammo box from Harbor Freight. Powered by LiFePo battery with meter.

Predator 2500 Inverter/Generator from Harbor Freight for remote portable operation. Using an 30 amp EMI Filter from Corcom inside a 6 X 6 box to help remove hash on 40 meters and up. 80 and 160 meters still noisy. Added a 400 watt inverter to the 20AH Bioenno Power battery box for additonal options in the field when generator not available. Great for emergencies. Replaced the 35 AH SLA battery with a very light 13.8v Bioenno Power battery.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Icom 735 was my backup rig used for portable/field day operations before building the "Go Box."  PSK31 portable ops running DroidPsk on a Nexus 7 tablet with easy portable power! Sold at the Huntsville Hamfest 2016. Now using Elecraft KX3 for portable/qrp operations. PSK31 & FT8 works well with fldigi on the laptop running thru SignaLink USB interface.

                          BEFORE                                                                                         AFTER

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3/1/2016 - Homebrew MagLoop 3.0  Now using larger Cardwell 12 - 244pf 2kv variable open air capacitor in 4 x 4 x 4 PVC junction box using wingnut & bolt to connect outer aluminum loop. Covers 40 meters to 10 meters. Using the YouKits FG-01 analyzer you can see tuning is very sharp with little band width but tunes from 1.1:1 SWR up to 1.3 SWR across the bands. Just rotate the tuning control while listening for "peak" noise reception and you're done.

Solar Power

The four panel 27 watt monocrystalline fold out makes a great portable power source to charge battery pack or USB powered devices using the charge controller to regulate voltage at 13.7 max. Provides close to 1 amp of charging current if needed. Hangs from tripod while using vertical antenna set up or just lay it on the ground.   Check out Amazon.com for good deals!

Here is my first 15 watt Monocrystalline panel that works well using a Solar Cube to regulate output for charging battery pack.
