Special event callsign for Willesborough Windmill.

Mills On The Air 2017

Visitors gather round the gazebo at GB8WWGB8WW was active during the afternoon of Sunday 14th May, but unfortunately conditions were very poor on the HF bands. We only worked five stations and only one of those was on HF - and that was by using a data mode! However we did enjoy the day and it was great to see Andy 2E0SJA, Colin G7HKT, Jeanette M3PHO and Colin G0PHO who stopped by to cheer us on. Mac G6NLZ and Peter G8WMZ did most of the operating with Hugh M0WYE doing some 2m and 70cms.

Fortunately we were right outside the cafe which was selling cups of tea and homemade cake, and the wind was fresh enough to keep the sails on the mill turning briskly.

The main aerial was a 40m dipole, but Mac tried his magnetic loop to access the 20m band.

Heritage and Craft Fair August 2016

The callsign was active for the Heritage and Craft Fair at the Mill, on Sunday 14th August 2016. The weather was glorious and there were vintage transport displays, craft stalls and a barbeque. Plenty of cups of tea were obtained from the cafe.

We mostly operated on 40m which was very variable, with deep fading. We also had a few contacts on 2m and 70cms. Thanks to all the stations who called in. We were running 100W to a dipole that was wrapped around the eaves of a large wooden barn behind our pitch. It works surprisingly well.

Peter G8WMZ, John G0GCQ and Hugh M0WYE were the operators this afternoon, but it was great to have visits from Mac G6NLZ, Colin G0PHO and Jeanette M3PHO and others. Thanks to all those who helped out and gave us contacts.

Although the weather was sunny and warm there was enough wind to turn the sails on the mill.

Mills on the Air 2016

The station was active on the 14th and 15th May 2016 for "Mills on the Air", National Mills Weekend.

We were active on 40m and also made some contacts on 2m and 70cms. Unfortunately 20m and 6m were not open during the weekend.

The Windmill is open to the public most weekends during the summer, check the website for details: http://www.willesboroughwindmill.co.uk/

Update after Saturday's operating: Oh dear - conditions seemed terrible, with a lot of QSB. High background noise - constant S4. Only four contacts made on 40m - GB2DWM, GB2EM, GB1BWM and OZ1RDP. Hope to work more tomorrow. Maybe we will try 20m as well. Photo below, shows Peter G8WMZ operating the station. We did have some visitors, both licenced and and general public, which was nice.

Update after Sunday:  Another day of difficult conditions, but we increased the number of contacts to 18 with a bit of help from local hams, some of whom made frequency suggestions - so thanks Mac G6NLZ and Gordon G4TZX. Seven Mill Stations worked over the weekend. We had more visitors today as well, including G0PHO, and G6NFE. The Mill were very happy to have us there and have invited us back again - so that was encouraging. We have learned a lot about putting together a special event station and have got some ideas about how we might improve the station.

Thanks to all those who helped over the weekend, to Chris G6AFY for the loan of the loudspeakers, and to those who ventured onto the air to find us. Don't forget to log or confirm your contact with us in the QRZ logbook.

Here is a little Youtube video showing the windmill, the stationary engine which can be used to run the mill, and Chris, G6AFY operating the station.  https://youtu.be/N_HqHFId8tE
