I used to have a future, then I got into ham radio.

"This radio lark's a wonderful hobby, y'know. I've got friends all over the world, all over the world... none in this country, but friends all over the world." --Tony Hancock (1924-1968)

My call used to be KD5EUO until Dec. 2016.

I have been an amateur radio operator since I was 27, with prior communications experience with the Civil Air Patrol since age 14. I have an interest in emergency communications and maintain a station that can be battery-operated backpack portable and solar-powered. I like digital modes and QRP.

My brother (KB5PRZ) and I (KA5D) operating a Yaesu FT-101EE for the first time at our cousin's station WB0YRQ, at ages 7 and 4. That's me with a death grip on the microphone, in the middle of a key-down. This was the very moment I knew I wanted a radio of my own someday.

Base station:

Setup 1: Yaesu FTDX-3000, Hy End Fed 8 band, 40m length. VHF/UHF FM is Kenwood TM-V71A and antenna is a Diamond X50 at 30'.

Setup 2: Yaesu FT-102 hybrid boat anchor, Dentron Super Tuner, ladder line to homebrew 80m dipole at 40ft firing east-west. Sometimes heard on 3870 boat anchors unlimited net, 7:30pm CST Wednesdays.

Receiving station is an AOR SA-7000 wide receive antenna feeding (by multicoupler) an AOR AR-8200, Pro-2006, RTL-SDR, and GRE PSR-600.

Mobile stations:

4 wheel mobile: Yaesu FT-8800 VHF/UHF, and Kenwood 900 Mhz commercial mobile for 33cm.

Contest Rover: VHF/UHF antennae: Yagis for 2M and 70cm, a dual band log periodic Elk Antenna, homebrew 6m dipole, and a Par 6m stressed Moxon. Amps are RF Concepts for 2m & 70cm.

Motorcycle mobile (2013 Zero S electric motorcycle): Yaesu FTM-10R dual-band, hands-free to helmet bluetooth headset.

Portable: Yaesu FT-60R VHF/UHF. Kenwood TK-481 for 900Mhz. Yaesu FT-897D, LDG Z-100+ Autotuner, Hy End Fed antenna.

I like portable radios.

Gratuitous shack photo:

My other interests include family, DIY projects, music, business, technology, electric motorcycles, rowing.

Above: The portable rig, with Yaesu FT-897D with internal batteries, LDG Z-100Plus autotuner, Tekkeon Li-Ion battery charged by solar, and PowerPort backpack.

Above: Brother (KB5PRZ) and son and dog operating portable rig atop Enchanted Rock, TX. Station powered by 62 watt Global Solar thin film PV array, in foreground. Antenna in background is Super Antenna MP-1 vertical. The whole station breaks down into one backpack.
