Hello! I go by the nickname Rick on the air.

First licensed in 1976 as a novice (WN4MWR), I upgraded to General the following year (WA4MWR). I then moved from the 4 call area to the 1 call area and was assigned KA1GBJ in 1980. When vanity call signs became available, I requested & received my current call (W0ZAP).  I finally got off my behind and upgraded to Extra Class in March of 2017.

My career path led me to an extended stint riding Uncle Sam's Gray Ships, Diagnostic Imaging Systems, Electronic & Mechanical Calibration Systems, and finally, Network Engineering. I'm retired now, so I have more time to spend with my "toys".

Over the years, I've dabbled in many facets of the hobby, including contesting, VHF/UHF work, chasing DX, Public Service, and Satellites.

After an extended period of being "radio inactive", I discovered the National Parks On The Air event conducted by the ARRL in 2016. I was bitten HARD. Although I didn't start participation in the event until late in the year, I still managed a respectable showing by years' end. What a wonderful event it was! I totaled 55 activations in about 45 days of participation. I had close to 3,000 confirmed QSO's per LoTW. I've had QSL cards made up for every park I activated; so if I owe you a card, drop me a line and I'll eventually get one to you.

Current interests include Digital Modes, chasing and activating parks for World Wide Flora & Fauna/Parks On The Air, attempting to improve my somewhat meager CW skills, and operating remote stations from my home QTH. I live in a deed restricted development and rely heavily on wire antennas. I also have a TransWorld TW System that I employ for portable activations as well as home use. Terrific system and highly recommended for folks in similar situations. I run an Icom IC-7610 at my home QTH and an Icom IC-7300 for portable operations. Both are terrific radios. I run Kenwood's TS-711 & TS-811 for VHF/UHF. I also run Elecraft's KX3/PX3/KXPA100 on occasion. I use an Elecraft K3-0/Mini with RemoteRig boxes for remote work.

I hope to hear & work you on the bands!
