Mixed Content

Example of a mixed content warning on a biography page

What is mixed content?

Mixed content occurs when the initial page is loaded over a secure HTTPS connection, but other resources (such as images and stylesheets) are loaded over an insecure HTTP connection. This is called mixed content because both HTTP and HTTPS content are being loaded to display the same page, and the initial request was secure over HTTPS.

Requesting subresources using the insecure HTTP protocol weakens the security of the entire page.

I haven't changed my biography page in months (or years), why does this matter now?

The internet as a whole is moving towards using HTTPS by default. Mixed content as always been discouraged but now many main stream browsers are starting to take action and block access to mixed content or they attempt to upgrade the content to HTTPS before displaying it (this doesn't always work).

Until recently passive mixed content was loaded in all browsers, as to block it would have broken many websites. This is now beginning to change and so it is vital to update any instances of mixed content on your page.

What do I do about it?

All images and content hosted by QRZ is already available securely using HTTPS and we automatically update your biography pages to reflect this.

If you are seeing a warning on your biography page this means that your page references content from another source using a HTTP URL. You have a few options:

  • Update the image to use a URL that starts with HTTPS. Many services already offer content via both HTTPS and HTTP, however others might require you to use and entirely different URL, You may need to consult with the original source of the content for more information.

  • Add the image to your QRZ account and reference it from there instead.
  • Remove the content. This may be the only option for abandoned or poorly maintained 3rd party content.
  • Do nothing. You will continue to see the warning on your biography page and some users may not be able to see the affected content.

How can I find the affected content?

Where possible we have highlighted the affected content on your biography page with an orange border (only visible to you), however if your browser is already blocking the content you may not be able to see it outside of the editor. Note the content could also be refrenced in any custom CSS you are using.

Where can I get more information?

Google has published and indepth article on this topic, it can be found here.
