        History

At about the age of 4 years, I remember being fascinated at hearing distant stations on a medium wave transistor radio. The fascination still remains! Thank you to my Father (GM8AVM) who has given me much help with radio over the years.

Whilst training as a merchant marine radio officer 1985-88, I obtained UK Class A (Full) License GM0HUU in 1987. I never went to sea or worked as a radio officer. Instead, I stayed on land pursuing a career in Engineering. I remain grateful to all the instructors at the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies who provided me with such an excellent foundation in the theory and practice of radio and electronics. I was inactive from amateur radio 1990-2012; QRV again from late 2013.

Currently enjoying HF digi-modes - especially JT65/JT9/FT8 (thank you Joe Taylor et al). Still like to work CW and occasionally SSB. I also like SSTV and generally trying out different modes. My thanks to all the amateurs who have put so much effort into developing and maintaining the wonderful variety of software and hardware that enables us to have so much fun with radio.

    Station

TEN-TEC Corsair II which I fitted with a DDS VFO for enhanced stability and split mode. The modification was completed using a kit supplied by N4YG.

Flex-1500 SDR with 5W output driving an RM HLA 150V+ linear. Mainly for digi-modes (JT, WSPR, PSK, RTTY, SSTV, OLIVIA, HELL etc.).

Yaesu FT-2000 mainly used for CW & SSB.

Yaesu FT-817ND for QRP / Portable.

Half-G5RV (G5RV Junior) at about 10m fed with a homemade 1:1 voltage balun using VK6YSF design here: http://vk6ysf.com/balun_1-1.htm.

20m inverted delta loop at about 5m fed with a homemade 4:1 voltage balun using VK6YSF design http://vk6ysf.com/balun_4-1.htm

10m long wire at about 5m fed via 9:1 UNUN which allows me to operate on 80m.

Current software in use includes:

WSJT-X v1.8.0-r8193    DXLab Suite (including DXKeeper logging)    JTAlertX 2.10.1    PowerSDR 2.7.2    FLdigi    FldigiDXLabsGateway    MMSSTV    KE5RS FTP Widget v7.4.0    EasyPal

When operating digital modes, I monitor and automatically upload spots to VK3AMA's excellent website:

http://hamspots.net

When operating SSTV, I upload last x12 SSTV images received to QSL.NET:

Hope to meet you on the air & thanks for looking me up.

73, Steve.
