History of KD8JV

I was an ARMY MARS Station NCOIC (Non Commission Officer in Charge) at Camp Ames, Korea, in 1977.   Back in those days, the MARS Station was a POST morale booster.  And it was!  As the soldiers could talk to their families, love ones and friends.  As I look back now!  I was able to make life a little better for most.  And there was bad communications I wish I never heard.  I had to flip a switch on "OVER" to transmit and receive as it was just a one way communication.  So the conversation was not "PRIVATE".  The equitment at Camp Ames, Korea was a "Collins KWM-2 and KWM-2A with the 30-L", and the antenna was a YAGI, made of wire and bamboo sticks, mounted on a telephone pole about 40 to 50 feet in the air!  But, in all it was good duty for me most of the time and I enjoyed it.  You must remember, there was no computers or cell phones in those days.  The Mars Station Call was "AB4CA" for "CAMP AMES KOREA" back in 1977!  It was located at "CHONG DONG NI"!  I am not sure the spelling is correct, but very close.  And the post is now closed by the U.S. Army and was turn over to the Korea Army, a long time ago.

I was first license as "KA8LZW", back in Late 1980.... (Novice Test/call)!  Later, I upgraded to Advanced Class on April 19th, 1983 with the call of KA8LZW and changed my call in August 5th, 1983 to KD8JV!  As I look back now, I remember struggling with Morse Code Test, even as a boy or now I hate to take tests!  I have achived many things in my life, but I am glad I did achived my license as an Amatuer Radio Operator.

STATION HERE:

Antenna installations!

Is a vertical ground mounted, "Butternut"  (HF9V) with no radials"!  I don't have the yard to run radials.  I "THINK" the Butternut HF9V is a GREAT Antenna.  I don't have the Six meter add on!  I use a dipole for Six Meters.  My antenna is 20 inches from a chain link fence that runs long in every direction!  My back yard is a postage stamp yard.  Small.  I live in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

My Rig is Icom IC-736 old rig.  But a good one.  I operate on HF:  "Except 160 meters and 60 meters (wish I could)"!

I normally run FT-8, JT65, JT9 most of the time, and CW, SSB and sometimes Rtty.

I do monitor here locally 2 meters, 146.520 simplex!  I hope to hear you.

I wish to "Thank You", for the contact!  I  hope to hear you again soon!

NOTE:  I always complete my contacts.  Unless the band drops out or power outage.

If you are a "VETERAN", May God BLESS You, and I thank you for your "Service to MY/OUR Country"!  I spent 5 years in the service of our country in the U.S. Army.  I am a VETERAN!  And if you are active military, may God protect you and your family!

In closing, please be a good Ham Operator.  Try not to interfere with other ham qso's.  Please show respect for the hobby and the privilege to have a license.  And please try to support QRZ and any other organizations that you can afford.

Note:

If you send me a card!!!   Please send me a "Stamp for a Letter"!  Or IRC!  I am retired and it would help me a lot.  I am not a member of the ARRL!  So I don't QSL through the ARRL Bureau!  There is a reason I don't and that is I am retired and finances.  But, I do get cards from the Bureau, and I greatly appreciate them and if you care to send me one it is greatly appreciated.  And if you do send a card, Thank You!  I am sorry I just cannot recipicate!

May God Bless you and your family.

73,

Glenn D. Winningham, A.R.S.  KD8JV
