My name is Steve and I live in the small town of Bartlett in Central Texas.  I was a train order/operator for the MKT & UP railroads for 16.5 years and then taught computer classes and 7th grade life science for 23 years before retiring in June 2013. I have a BS in Education and also a BS in Computer Science with a minor in Biology.  I started out in CB in December of 1972 and was always interested in Amateur Radio.  I started working on the code and got sidetracked and never got started again.  My cousin, Michael (KG5CIJ) began talking about an interest in Amateur Radio, so we started studying and taking practice tests and got our Tech license in May of 2014.  We then started studying to upgrade to General and 3 other members of our group started studying for their Tech license. Yesterday (9/7/14), we all went to Austin and tested.  Michael and I upgraded to General and the other 3 members of our group, Jim (My 1st cousin and KG5CIJ's uncle), Elvin (A 40+ yr friend), and another Michael (we call him Red) all passed their Tech.

I currently have a Kenwood TM-V71A mobile connected to a power supply that I am using for my 2m/70cm rig.  My antenna is a homebrew copper J-pole up about 35 feet.  I have an ICOM 756 Pro II connected to a G5RV Jr. that is flattopped near 40 feet for my HF rig and I made my first 40 meter contacts shortly after getting home from the testing session.  I'm having a little RF problem in the shack that I need to get figured out, but it's working for now.  I plan on replacing the G5RV Jr with separate 20 meter and 40 meter dipoles in the near future to see if that will help with the RF.  I also have a new Yaesu 857D and LDG tuner that I need to get put in my pickup so I have mobile capabilities. I also bought a Heathkit SB200 from a fellow operator in Illinois (KD5AIR), who was one of my first contacts on 40 meters.  As soon as I get it checked out, I hope to have it on the air.

'73 and hope to catch you on the bands somewhere, someday. And if you have any comments or suggestions to get me pointed in the right direction, please let me know.

40 meter and 80 meter wires are up.  RF problems solved.  Next on the agenda - 6 and 20 meter wires to go up soon.  '73

1/31/15 Put up a Hustler 5btv vertical with 12m and 17m addons this week.  Really been enjoying it.  Today, I went with my cousin Michael (KG5CIJ), my cousin Jim (KG5DWR), long-time friend Elvin (KG5DWS), and Michael's cousin Brad.  Michael and I tested and upgraded to Extra , Jim and Elvin tested and upgraded to General, and Brad tested and passed his Tech exam.

2/9/15 The other Michael (KG5DWP) tested 2/7/15 and upgraded to General.  Congratulation, Red :)

4 element Maco Shooting Star taken down and redone.  Removed the wire reflector.  Replaced it with a vertical and horzontal reflector.  Changed all elements and spacing for 10m.  Works great. Can't seem to get the vertical elements to tune.  I'm thinking maybe the gamma match is bad.  We're going to change it out next time we take the antenna down and try that.

3/7/15 Ameritron AL-811H added to the station.  Great amplifier.

9/22/15  With the hard work of KG5CIJ (Michael), KG5DWS (Elvin), and KG5DWP (Michael), I now have a beautiful Hexbeam at about 47ft.  I think I'm going to love this antenna :)  Thanks, guys, for all your hard work.

2/11/16 Added a Yaesu FTDX-3000D as main radio.  ICOM 756 Pro II is now resting on a shelf as a backup.
