My first DX was using a Radio Shack "Rocket" xtal radio (plastic, shaped like rocket, ferrite core tuner with antenna that moved up and down to tune AM band). So tried hearing New York City (WABC, Cousin Brucie) from Dedham, Massachusetts...did it... 1961.

Then moved in with another uncle, who had a 1930s-era Emerson DA-287 SW receiver tucked away in the basement...QSLed over 50 countries up through 1966. During this time, I met K1BRE (SK) who once handed me his D104 mic to QSO with a Mississippi ham via his Collins S-Line and a tribander beam...WOW... Also during this time, my best buddy, Luck Hurder and I hung out quite a bit (read on...).

US Navy jumped out at me, so I took up specialized electronic maintenance, where I was also exposed to fellow sailors' Morse Code training...but didn't take up the opportunity (yes: missed). But...Luck (WA4STO), as it would have it, took up Ham Radio, motivated by Red Cross comms...actually he was the one who moved me to take up my career path in the Navy, which rewarded me with both a BSEE and MSEE degree before I retired...Thanx, Luck!

Jump to 1985...my neighbor across the cul-de-sac, Ed, (N4LJZ), challenged me to take some Ham Classes at a local school...found a good Elmer (Ted, K3ULQ, SK), got a Swan 350 and 18 AVQ vertical, and took off...Certainly smoked a few finals with that rig. Then, found an IC-735 that didn't heat the ham shack so much...SSB and CW and propagation were the rage then...

Life, kids, work got in the way after about 2002....

Just getting back now in 2017 after long hiatus, and new retirement. I had just renewed contact with Luck, and he told of digital things happening, that with a few cables here, some modems there, and software, my dusty rig could have me off and running...

Got my IC-735, MFJ-1279, AT-11MP working...attic dipoles hanging in there, too...Now running WSJT-X v1.8.0 of course, plus JTAlertX, and HRD Logbook...and only 30 watts in the digital modes!!!!

Got my Digital WAS...and working DX (82 confirmed last count), of course. Found Special Events Stations cool, too (13 Colonies, Scouts Jamboree, Fire Prevention, Canada BiCentennial, for example...).

Got all my paper (1985 - 2002) log entries put in LOTW, eQSL, QRZ and HRDLog.net...whew. Also in Club Log...

FT8: Just awesome..For WAS Digital, AC7N came to my rescue. FB OM in my book. Also got early AM VK2 here for Worked All Continents..whee...I can see where it is crowded, some (just some) lack of courtesy, but still a good mode. I still hit up SSB and JT65...Thanks to the named Hams, and those I have worked, and am about to...an honorable hobby...and most appreciation to my XYL of 48 years (her patience with me is inestimable...).
