The Radio Amateur Club of the TU Wien was founded in 1983. Since June 2014, the trustee of the club is Chris (OE1VMC). The club station is located at the Institute of Telecommunications in downtown Vienna, Austria. The institute is located in a six storey high building which has a flat roof 32 meters above ground level providing ample space for antennas. The Maidenhead locator is JN88EE47ME.

The radio amateur club is currently active on wavelengths ranging from 160m to 3cm and our logs are uploaded almost dayly to QRZ, LoTW, eQSL.

The activities of the club members are documented in our qrzblog. 

Our members share two things: Firstly, they are affiliated with TU Wien (or they were affiliated in the past). Secondly, they share their ham spirit and enthusiasm for ham radio.

The fotos below document the roof visit with antenna inspection on June 18, 2014.

 
   

Our Radio Amateur Club Station participated in the 2015 IARU-HF Championship during July 11-12, with the special call sign OE0HQ of the Headquarters-Station of the Austrian Amateur Radio Society (Results Database).

In the All Austrian Emergency Contest AOEC 2015 on May 1st, the club station was operated by Dieter OE8KDK and Chris OE1VMC. For the 40m, 80m and 160m bands, we have erected a tripple band fan dipole on the neighboring roof. The dipoles for 40m and 80m bands are in inverted-V configuration. The arms of the 160m band dipole are approximately Z-shaped ("Z-dipole"). 

The left photo (below) shows the OPs checking the guy rope of the dipole antennas. On the right, Dieter and Chris smile into the camera while briefly relaxing from the heat of competition. Further info about the HF contest: rules and previous scores: see here.

The photo below left shows the main mast which carries both a SteppIR DB36 Yagi antenna (covering HF bands from 40m to 6m) and a vertically polarized antenna with mast amplifier for the VHF/UHF bands.

On the photo below right, the 3.8m dish of our S-band satellite groundstation is shown (now dismantled). The ground station supported several scientific satellite missions. Among those missions were the MOST project and the COROT (COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transits, not operational anymore). Currently, the satellite groundstation is not operational and needs repair.

SteppIR DB36 Yagi Antenna

This is a motor-controlled 4 element Yagi-Uda antenna with variable element lengths. The elements consist of two copper-beryllium tape conductors which are spooled in the element housing on the antenna boom.  The copper-beryllium tape is perforated which enables the use of a stepper motor to drive them with sprockets. This gives very precise control of each element length. The copper-beryllium tape is driven out into a support tube made of fiberglass. Two extra passive elements of constant length for the 6m band were added. Thus, it is a 6-element Yagi for the 6m band.

To assess the gain and directivity of the SteppIR DB36, the antenna is modelled with the software tool EZNEC+ v. 5.0 (by Roy W7EL). The element lengths of the antenna are configurable by the SDA100 controller. The SDA100 controller software features default configurations for three types of patterns: "forward beam", "reverse beam", and "bi-directional beams". First, the element lengths were read from the controller software and a Matlab function writes the corresponding wire geometry to an ASCII text file which is imported by EZNEC. The obtained simulation results for the default forward beam configuration at 7 MHz are shown below.
