Hello

LOTW and eQSL are the preferred QSL method.  I upload and check on a near daily basis.

QSL Cards - If you send me a QSL card direct, include SAE and 2GS for JA and most other Oceania.  3GS for every where else.  IRC's are of no use to me, none of my local post offices will accept them or have even heard of them.  No GS means I will reply via the bureau.

My callsign is VK6DW.  I used to hold VK6FIAC and VK6PXF.  I have been licensed since late 2012 first as a 'F' call, then finally 1/Jan/2015 as a full call, so not all that long in the scheme of things. I am keen on HF phone and digital modes and am trying to get some proficiency in morse.

My antenna farm as follows.

  • I use 40m horizontal Double Extended Zepp for 160,80,40,30,17m and 12m. It is fed with home brew 400 ohm ladder line via a 4:1 balun.  ATU is the rigs internal one.  A very simple antenna - easy to live with and very versatile. Also not a bad transducer.  Could do with more height though.  About 12m off the ground at its higest.
  • A quarter wave ground plane for 40m recently built.  I like this antenna - it seems sensitive and good for DX.  It isnt that much noisier than my dipole.  Not much good for local rag chews though.
  • 10m, 15m and 20m are taken care of by a 3 band 3 element TET given to me by one of my mentors.

My radios are ICOM,  Kenwood and Yaesu.  Nothing unusual there.  My portable radio is an Codan NGT, installed in my car and used for Sota, WWFF and whatever else I need portability for. It works for hours off a  15A LiPO battery at 50W and 100W.

My passion at the moment is getting my DXCC and developing some DX skills.

I also play saxophone in a big band in Perth.  Google 'Rush Hour Big Band' if you are interested.

A bit of history - The VK6DW call used to be held by Don Hawksworth up until 2009?? I have no relationship with Don.  I think he was very active and held in some respect in the ham community.  I have read old archives about QRP and packet radio that Don was involved with.  I have talked to hams who were his peers.  He was active in in the Albany area of WA I think.

After a bit more digging, I found that VK6DW was also held by D.W. Edgar of Glentromie, New Norcia in 1932 (that's the only year I could find reference to).  Have a look here for the information.

I have only had VK6DW since January 2015 and am at least the third amateur to keep it on the air.  I am pleased to have it.  I think it is great to keep these call signs alive and in use.

Thanks for looking me up.

Cheers and 73
