I have been a ham since 1962 with WA6WGS (WV6WGS) as my original call. I obtained my novice amateur radio license (WV6WGS) in 1962 at the age of 16. I operated CW on 80 and 40 meters using a hand full of crystals that set the transmitter frequency. In those days, you would call CQ and then tune the whole novice band, because VFO operation by a novice was not allowed by the FCC. One of my first transmitters was an ARC 5, one for 40M and one for 80 Meters. After a while I used a Globe Chief transmitter. Receiver was a Hallicafters SX 110. The novice license expired in one-year and could not be renewed. I upgraded to a General within the year. I purchased a Hallicafters HA-5 VFO to take advantage of the new frequencies and modes I would work.  I could not afford a modulator after that, and used my mother’s Wollensak reel to reel tape recorder for a grid modulator.  Several years later I upgraded to an Advanced and then to an Extra class amateur license in 1981. At that time, applicants had to take their code and theory tests from an FCC examiner.

These days, enjoy working DX, the new data mode FT8, RTTY, SSB AND CW.

Hope to meet you on the bands.
