Welcome! My name is Rick. My permanent QTH is Bay City, Texas in Matagorda County.  See information below on portable operation from the farm in Ohio.

Note: I am happy to return your paper QSL. No SASE, IRCs, or green stamps required.

I was first licensed as a Novice in 1970 with the callsign WN8FVB and enjoyed making crystal controlled CW contacts with a Knight T-60 transmitter and Knight R-100A receiver that I built from an Allied Radio kit. I grew up in north central Ohio on a farm. I joined the Navy after high school in the summer of 1970, spent six years in the Navy, and then returned to Ohio for two years. I moved to Texas for my career in 1978 and have been at this same QTH for 39 years. I had not been very active on the HF bands for several years until December of 2012. I retired in July 2013 and am really enjoying the additional time available to make new friends on my favorite bands and modes.

One of my most memorable ham radio experiences was operating WB8FVB/MM in 1975 from a nuclear powered submarine on the east coast of South America. It was rewarding to make phone patches from our crew to their families back in the U.S.

My current working conditions include the Drake Twins, R-4B and T-4XB. The amplifier is a Heathkit SB-200. I also operate an Icom IC-756 Pro III barefoot on all bands. In August, 2013 I began RTTY and PSK31 operation using the Pro III and a SignaLink USB interface. At the end of July, 2014 I added JT65 to my digital repertoire and have been enjoying those contacts. I discovered the newest mode and made my first FT8 QSO on July 18, 2017.  I see many of you are falling victim to this new mode also. Hi Hi. My primary antenna for 10, 15, and 20 meters is a three element triband Cushcraft ATB-34 beam at 55 ft. I am using a full size G5RV dipole for 12, 17, 40 and 80 meters. This dipole antenna is 50 ft.high.

I am a member of the Matagorda County Amateur Radio Club, the European Phase Shift Keying Club (EPC) #21423

Portable Operation: I periodically operate from Ohio in Seneca County, near Attica when I visit the farm, Loc: EN81na. Most recently, I operated there from May 13th to May 23rd, 2017.  Other periods of portable operation included September 17 to September 27, 2016 and December 10 to 19, 2016.  I look forward to a contact with you from the farm. You can QSL direct to my permanent address in Texas if you need Seneca County or EN81na. I use an Icom IC-745 with an inverted V antenna with the apex at 35 ft.  For digital contacts, I use theSignaLink USB Interface and FLdigi or JT65HF HB9HQX edition. Thank you for your QSOs from the farm in northern Ohio.

My second hobby is sailing. I enjoy sailing in the coastal waters of Texas. I sail in Tres Palacios and Matagorda Bays.  I retired from the South Texas Project Electric Generating Station in July of 2013.  If you would like to see pictures of the nuclear power plant where I worked for 35 years, visit this website: http://www.stpegs.com/#/media/photos
