After 30 years of service as a Sr. Engineer with a major telephone company, I initially retired in 1995.  I then went back to work and spent an additional 12 years as a Sr. UNIX systems and Network Security Administrator, and retired again in 2008.  Since playing with computers was my hobby, the last 12 years was like getting paid for playing.  Working in IT was very enjoyable.

Now that my wife and I are both retired, we can spend a few months each year traveling around this beautiful continent in our motorhome.   I now have much more time for my hobbies of astrophotography and ham radio.  I use an old 10" Meade LX-200 telescope and an SBIG ST-8 camera for taking pictures of objects in the night sky.

My interest in electronics began in elementary school and has continued all my life.  I was first licensed in 1977.  I was already out of the Army and became interested in CBs but decided that with my military radio operator background, that I should study and become a HAM.  I purchased an AMECO code record from the Heathkit store and brushed up on my CW.  During my test to become a novice, the instructor asked me to take the Tech test because it would help me understand the questions at the next level.  I passed that test and he used the same logic asking me to take the General, Advanced, and Extra tests.  Unfortunately, I was only able to get to 18 wpm on the CW test so I my entry into Amateur Radio was as an Advanced Class Operator and I've never bothered to upgrade to Extra.

After only a few years,  I became interested in computers and ignored my HAM activities for almost 40 years.  In December of 2016, I rediscovered my love of the hobby and found that digital modes and computer logs are a wonderful additions that were not available when I first was licensed back in 1977.  I didn't get back on the air until May of 2017.  I'm now spending my time experimenting with antennas and using all the new digital modes.   I am very active on the digital modes and was able to achieve DXCC and WAS on 6 bands in less than 160 days using only 40 watts and 20/30 meter inverted "V"  at 15 feet.

I've also used a ground mounted Hy-Gain 14AVQ Vertical for 40 meters and shunt feed my 58 foot tower for use as a vertical on 80 meters.  My beam antenna is a TH-6DXX  but it has not been used in 40 years. It is being rebuilt and is sitting on the garage floor.  The old 2 meter beam is beyond help will be replaced with a 6m/2m/70cm beam.   Once the summer heat and lightning storms of summer have passed, I will re-install the beam antennas on the tower.

I have not yet used my new IC-7300 to talk using SSB nor have I used CW for making contacts.  I was trained as a radio operator during my 9 years in the Army so voice and cw are not strangers to me.  The new digital modes are so enjoyable that I just have not used the traditional modes for communication.  I still have a complete, working Yaesu FT-101 and the matching accessories but never use them since the purchase of the ICOM IC-7300.

I keep my electronic logs on LOTW, QRZ, eQSL and HRDLOG.
